NOYN Newsletter

Newark Opportunity Youth Network (NOYN) is New Jersey’s leading advocate of opportunity youth with a body of replicable initiatives that are designed to address youth disconnection. NOYN's work is organized around four key elements of Education, Workforce Development, Policy Advocacy, and Systems Building.

Read the stories below that display how NOYN’s initiatives are working together to re-engage opportunity youth while drastically changing systems that inhibit their success.

The Class of 2022 LEAD Charter School graduated on June 23rd and celebrated their accomplishments in an emotion-filled graduation ceremony. Despite obstacles and challenges, they showed perseverance and dedication to not merely education but their path towards success. Each and every graduate has their own story. You can hear a few of their stories on LEAD Charter School's Instagram, Twitter and Facebook accounts.

NOYN released a report, " Funding Streams for Opportunity Youth," in partnership with the Heldrich Center for Workforce Development, detailing the current funding streams for young people and how systems within youth workforce development can improve in supporting opportunity youth.

The Heldrich Center gave an overview of federal funding policies such as TANF, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and the Federal Pell Grant Program and interviewed several leaders in the workforce development space. Recommendations include:
  • Rigid eligibility requirements prevent effectively serving youth
  • Youth-serving programs face limited funding and lack of investment
  • Many existing youth policies, despite their best intentions, are not youth centric enough

MBKN recently released a policy brief on Civilian Complaint Review Boards (CCRBs) and related legislation. The brief outlines the history and context of how CCRBs became an asset to local communities to improve public safety, and includes an explanation of what a CCRB is and the various models of CCRBs used throughout the country. MBKN encourages the support of A1515 and S2295 which would grant local CCRBs the ability to subpoena witnesses and evidence as well as other capabilities that would investigate police misconduct.
